Mix it up with Ephemera | Hip Kit Club

Yesterday, I shared this post over at the Hip Kit Club all about Ephemera.

Do you ever get overwhelmed by all those die cut Ephemera that come in your kits?  I assure you, you aren’t alone in this!!  When I first receive my Hip Kit, I am full of excitement, I get it all out, I drool over it for a bit and then reality sets in, how am I going to organise all this and use it all up? For me as I am a visual person, I grab a divided serving dish (purposely bought for die cut storage whilst I am creating with a kit of course!) and dump it all out in there so I can ‘see’ it all with the aim of using it all up.  Because as we all know there will be more gorgeous die cuts arriving in the next kit.

Today, I have a layout to share using the January 2017 Hip Kits:

Focus on Ephemera

Okay now, we need to figure out how to use all the die cuts on your layout without overwhelming your page.  For me this means I am going to layer those suckers up!   Don’t get stressed about ‘seeing’ the whole die cut on your page.  As you can see below, I have added the gold butterfly under the corner of the patterned paper and my photo and then I have added some word stickers on top of that.

Focus on Ephemera detail 2

Now let’s think outside the box, don’t forget that you can negative space from a die cut for something a little different – I have used the negative space of the ‘ampersand’ on this layout tucked in behind the bottom right of my photo.

Focus on Ephemera detail 1

Lastly, I really liked the word ‘dreamy’ die cut but it was a bit large and overwhelming on my page so I tucked it under my layered photo so you can still read what it says but overall it was less dominating.

I finished off my layout by adding a title using the Studio Calico Thickers from the Embellishment Kit and created a border around the page.   Because I like hoarding Thickers (a whole new blog post could be dedicated to this!), it is a mission of mine to get more of them on my page.  In this instance, I found the Thickers work a bit like journaling on my page as well as a design element and because I have left them in a natural white state they blend and don’t take over the page.

I hope that I have inspired you to empty out those packets of Ephemera and start layering  up those die cuts on your layouts. Thanks for stopping by the blog today!

Design Principles | Hip Kit Club

As I am still waiting on my first design team kit, I thought I would share a few of my favourite design principles that I use to when I create my layouts. I have a quite balanced scrapbooking style where I find myself drawn to basic design principles when I create.

The Visual Triangle
Firstly, I often using the visual triangle (placing elements in three different points to create a triangle on my layout) where I cluster embellishments to create interest on my page. I also tend to repeat my elements/or even colours in these spaces. For example, If I place a butterfly embellishment in one space then I add another butterfly embellishment to the other points of the triangle as this makes a nice visual arrangement in my page. As you can see in my ‘Love This’ layout, I have created a visual triangle of embellishments with the pink butterfly, the double hearts and the wood veneer ‘this’. I have also repeated the butterflies on my layout as described above (top right of my photo, bottom left hand side of my layout and also under the wood veneer ‘this’. Often you can create several different triangles on the one page!

The Rule of Thirds
Another design concept I use on my scrapbooking layouts is a spacing design principle called the “rule of thirds” . When I use the rule of thirds I divide the 12 x 12 space on my page into 3s and place my focal point on one of these points it draws you eye into your photo or embellishment cluster rather than putting your main focus on the centre of your page. On my ‘Rocking Hunting’ layout , I have split my layout into thirds and placed my photo off to the right hand side and more to the bottom left and then used the butterfly cut file to draw you to that bottom third of my layout and ultimately into my photo. I have also added my title in the far left hand (third) of my layout which adds further balance to my layout. You might have noticed I have created a ‘visual triangle’ on this page as well.

First Tooth | Hip Kit Club |Feb 2016

Hi, today I am sharing a layout for Hip Kit Club using the February 2016 Kits.  I have used one of my favourite patterned papers in the kit for my background and I love how the black and white photo and the other papers/project life cards ‘pop’ on the navy spots!  I have also used some of the project life cards and Amy Tangerine stickers and frame as embellishments on my page!  Taylor loosing her first tooth was a momentous occasion in our house  and I couldn’t wait to record this special event in her life.

Hip Kit |December Kit

Hi everyone, hope 2016 has been amazing so far!  For some reason, my WordPress has been a pain and not wanting to add any photos to my blog post so I haven’t been able to post any layout pictures in the last couple of weeks. But it seems to be back on track so fingers crossed.

Here are two layouts I have done with the Hip Kit Club – December Kits. The first one is of Taylor and I on New Years Eve.  I used the cut file designed by Nicole Nowosad for the December Kits to create my background by using the ‘stars’ as a mask with texture paste.  I then added a piece of the vellum from the Cardstock Add On Kit to soften the pale green cardstock that  I have used on my background.

My second  layout with the December Kit is a cute one of Aimee and  one of the birds that  is at Sandspit Holiday Park.  For this layout, I used a few pages from the Maggie Holmes Shine Collection 6″ paper pack from the December Embellishment Kit.  I also loved the wood veneer ‘dream today’ which I altered and coloured in a cute mint colour.  The birds from the Maggie Holmes Shine Collection Chipboard pieces were perfect embellishments for my photo too.

Pretty at 3 | Color Stories Inspiration #171

It is a rainy Monday morning here and after the weekend I am catching up after the weekend with blogging some scrap layouts I have completed recently.  I have a busy week so trying to get on top of all the house stuff and things so it is less stressful all round.  I have always got great intentions of being organised, meal plan and such like but often feel like I am even too busy for that.  What do you guys get up too to be organised for the week!

In the meantime, here is case file 171 for CSI.  I really liked this colour scheme although struggled a bit end the end… the mojo has been lacking of late!
171flat

And here is how I solved the case file:

CSI 171 unframed

To create my background I used ‘the all heart’ cut file from The Cut Shoppe as a stencil with texture paste.

Evidence: Stripes, Triangles, food related embellishment, jar, labels, something transparent, texture paste, wood and cork and dots!
Testimony: Documented a celebration – Aimee’s third birthday!!

Scrap Our Stash – Guest Designer for June

Hi

I am super excited to be the Guest Designer for Scrap Our Stash for June.   The June Scrap Our Stash challenge is to use the word = B R A D S as the basis of designing layout.  Here is how I used these elements on my layout.

I just love taking part in challenges which use up my stash.  As like most scrapbookers – I do have a fair bit of that.  For this layout I was inspired by an Instagram photo of my daughter and her best friend at dancing together.  I love using lots of product on my layouts along with white space for balance – so I have included lots of layering and lots of words to portray my feelings about the photo I am scrapbooking and the girls cute bond at such a young age.  I was instantly drawn to using the colour Blue which was perfect for the word challenge.  I started off my layout with some pale blue mist and some hand drawn circles on some white cardstock and then I dug into my stash for some gorgeous products from Maggie Holmes, Dear Lizzy, Heidi Swapp and Freckled Fawn.  Finishing it off with some sequins to add some interest.

B – The colour blue
R – Round circles drawn on my layout
A – Arrows
D – doily/doodling
S – Stickers, sequins, stamping

Hey,

It is time to share another layout for CSI, Case File 162  This one has a super fun colour scheme – perfect for scrapping those summer photos.

162 flatWhich is exactly what I have done.  Here is my layout and how I solved this case:CSI 162 unframedI’ve used lots of Amy Tangerine – Stitched collection on this one along with some of my stash of Heidi Swapp and some Elle’s Studio as well.  I mainly used the 6×6″ paper pad which is a really cost effective way of buying up all the new products out there without having to buy the full 12×12 sheet.  The circles are just pencil circles which I have traced around a jar lid  to get this effect.

Evidence: Circles, Solid Background, Stars, labels

Testimony: Document Your Story in a Q&A format.  Here the girls favourite part of going on holiday over Christmas was taking part in the lolly scramble.  Where they collected lots of lollipops and ate about half of what they collected.  The bell rings at 6pm and they go running with all the other little kids to wait eagerly for the lollies to be thrown out to the crowd of children.

Thanks for stopping by today.  You have until Thursday 7th May to solve this case file!

Cheers

Just be you

I’m back with another layout to share.  I have been getting the Hip Kits Clubs’ scrapbooking kits for the last few months – wow that is a tongue twister lol.  I haven’t had much of an opportunity to have a good play with them yet but it has been on my to do list to get stuck into some kits when my design team commitments allow me to do so.

I have created this layout using the February Kit.  As you know I love using kits as I find they just give me enough product to work with at one time and I love how it coordinates together too.

This layout is actually for their weekly challenge on Hip Kit Club’s Members Forum on Facebook. And I just love this photo of my girls with their friend MacKenzie at the caravan.  MacKenzie is always picking up Aimee and carting her a round and of course Taylor has this weird cute expression on her face too.

Oh Lucky!

Hi everyone,

Today I have a layout to share with you that I have created for Color Stories Inspiration #154.  This one is quite different for me but I loved this photo of my girls and one of their adventures on our Christmas holiday to the caravan.

154And my layout:CSI 154 unframed

Evidence: Wood grain (wood veneers) and Stripes

Testimony: My journaling is on the back. But I used the prompt word ‘possibilities’ “The possibilities are endless when you are running wild and free on holiday. Here Aimee and Taylor spent hours crab hunting on the mud flats with friends. I love the opportunities that camping brings to explore new things and have adventures. The possibilities are truly endless…”

Here is my layout using the cut file ” You’ve been punch’d”.
I love all the large symbols in this cut file and thought they would work really nicely on the background of my layout.  I originally cut them out in white cardstock but added a hint of bright pink with my Mister Huey water colour paints to give them a bit of ‘pop’ from the background.
